2) Identify the suitable Reamer
• The green area shows the tolerance field of the bore according to DIN 7161.
• The blue area shows the resulting tolerance field of the reamer following DIN 1420.
• Reamers that lie in the green area can be used as long as they do not exceed the tolerance limits. Reamers in the blue area are in the ideal tolerance field.

* The manufacturing tolerances are assigned to specific tolerance fields and they ensure that the reamed bore is within the associated tolerance field and that at the same time the reamer can be used economically.
Please take into account that the size of the reamed bore depends on other factors besides the manufacturing tolerance of the reamer, e.g.

- the angles of the cutting edge,
- vthe gate of the reamer,
- the clamping of the workpiece,
- the tool holder,
- the condition of the machine tool,
- the lubrication and
- the material of the workpiece

These factors are taken into account by the upper safety margin.
The lower safety margin ensures that the reamer can be used economically for as long as possible without wear making the reamer unusable (too small).
